01. Wandlebury County Park: New Chalk Grassland Creation

The Gallops: New Chalk Grassland Meadow

The aim of the project is to increase biodiversity and expand Wandlebury Country Park, by providing public access to previously private land and managing it for nature.

0.64 hectares were purchased and are now being managed to improve the quality of the rare chalk grassland habitat.

A new viewpoint was created with a bench for a beautiful vista over Cambridge, and the meadow is now open for the public to enjoy, helping to improve public health and wellbeing.

Before: Private land with no public access, not being managed for nature conservation.

During: Hay was removed to decrease nutrients, allowing chalk grassland species to thrive. Fencing was installed to enable animals to graze.

After: Visitors can experience beautiful views over Cambridge from the newly installed viewpoint bench (below right), and it is anticipated that chalk grassland species will thrive, including early spring-flowering Cowslip (below left).
