Creating a Species-rich Grassland Biodiversity Offsetting Site
Flack Field is adjacent to Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve and SSSI. The long-term aim is to create species-rich lowland meadow priority habitat as an extension to the nature reserve.
The field was arable farmland until 2022, and the meadow was sown in Autumn 2022. The meadow will be managed by an annual mid-summer hay cut. The field has also been fenced to allow for future grazing, by cattle or sheep. Public access will not be allowed, but the meadow is visible from the adjacent public right of way. The habitat bank will operate for 30 years, after which the field will be fully integrated into the larger nature reserve.
This project forms part of a larger project to create a single large Nature Reserve, incorporating Fulbourn Fen and Fleam Dyke, within the Cambridge Nature Network.
