05. Coton Countryside Reserve: Pond Creation/Restoration

New Ponds, Leaky Log Dams: Transforming Ditches & Restoring Rivers

The aim of the project was to increase biodiversity, reduce flood risk, reduce erosion, and improve the riparian habitat. 0.6 hectares of habitat were created or improved, including the creation of a new pond within Coton Countryside Reserve. The public are now able to view these new habitats.

Pond Creation (Lost Meadow)

Before: An overgrown agricultural drainage ditch.

During: The drainage ditch was opened out into a new wildlife pond.

After: A leaky log weir was built to provide a varied depth of water and settlement of sediment. Native aquatic planting helps to kickstart the new habitat and filters agricultural pollutants.

Leaky log-dams (Wheatcases Ditch)

Before: An overgrown, fast-flowing, agricultural drainage ditch.

During: Leaky log-dams were created to slow the flow along ditches before it reaches Bin Brook. This helps to reduce the risk of downstream flooding in high flow conditions.

After: Dams create ponds for wildlife.

Bin Brook Restoration

Before: The incised channel was causing high levels of erosion and sediment input.

During: Banks were reprofiled to improve habitat and increase light penetration.

After: Coir matting and Hazel fascine bundles will protect the new banks until native wildflower seed and aquatic plug plants establish themselves.
