19. Wandlebury Country Park: Meadow And Woodland

New Chalk Grassland Meadow and Woodland

The aim of the project was to increase biodiversity and expand Wandlebury Country Park by 20% by transforming private farmland.  10 hectares of arable farmland were purchased to turn into 9.5 hectares of rare chalk meadows and 0.5 hectares of woodland and scrub.  The meadows have been opened to the public and include a picnic area, dog exercise area, and a circular walk with benches, improving public health and wellbeing.

Before: Private land with no public access. A species-poor agricultural grass mix, not managed for conservation.

During: 1,500m of livestock fencing were installed to enable conservation grazing and 0.69ha of woodland and scrub were planted by 48 volunteers. The field will be seeded with chalk grassland species.

After: A new path has been created so the public can walk around the meadow, and a new bench has been installed with beautiful views over the meadows and woodland. In a few years’ time rare chalk grassland species will be established for the benefit of nature and for people to enjoy.
