Beating the Bounds of Stourbridge Common

Before paper maps, commoners would make an annual circuit of the boundaries of their common land, to show children where the boundaries lay, to pass on folk memory. Join us to “Beat the Bounds” of Stourbridge Common and celebrate its history, trees, plants, and wildlife. We’ll stop at various places to hear about

  • The history of enclosures in Cambridge
  • Coldham’s Brook and the Great Chalk Stream Project
  • Black Poplar trees
  • Cattle, grazing and their importance for biodiversity
  • Foraging

Schedule
11 am: Meet at the Children’s Playground
11.15 am: Guided walk around the Common
12:30 pm: “Bring your own” picnic in the play area – join a creative art activity for
children, and a display about Stourbridge Common.

All welcome – no booking required!

What to expect:

  • A leisurely (child’s pace) walk around the edges of Stourbridge Common
  • Pauses to gather and hear short talks about aspects of the Common, aimed at
    children
  • Willow switches will be provided
  • Uneven grassy paths, can be muddy
  • Cattle are grazing, please be aware
  • No toilets
