33. Nature and Us

A Walk in Wandlebury Country Park with the Khidmat Sisters

A visit to Wandlebury Country Park by 18 women from the Khidmat Sisters group in July 2025. Born from a collaboration between Cambridge Past, Present and Future and Ayesha Ulhaq of the Cambridge Interfaith Programme, and supported by Clara Todd of Water Sensitive Cambridge, the film draws on Ulhaq’s research into the emotional geographies of British Muslim women. Filmmaker and artist Diana Scarborough recorded the event and made it into a five-minute film. With warmth and humour, the film explores barriers to access to nature in the UK, safety and wellbeing, and relationships with water and nature in a land different to the one you grew up in.

Across all cultures, offering a meal or drink communicates care and signals trust, so food sharing is naturally a theme of any Khidmat sisters meeting, and so it was an element of this event too. Elements of a foraged feast are introduced during the walk, culminating in a shared meal that connects traditional knowledge and land stewardship with a gesture of welcome in the British countryside.

This was a River Cam CAN (Climate Action through Nature) project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
