14. Lower Valley Farm: Meadow and Woodland Creation

New Species Rich Meadow and Woodland on Former Arable Farmland

The aim of the project is to increase biodiversity. 60 hectares of previously arable farmland was converted into chalk grassland meadows, and a mosaic of new woodland, scrub and hedgerows was also planted.

Before: Lower Valley Farm Field, species poor, agricultural land.

The first phase of the BNG Lower Valley Farm Project included the establishment of ‘interim course grassland’ which aids the depletion of nutrients. This enhances soil conditions for when calcareous grassland is established. The first area of wildflower grassland was sown in autumn 2025.

Livestock-handling infrastructure, fencing and a roadway was also installed so the meadows can be managed using conservation grazing, which helps create rare chalk grassland habitat. Water pipes and troughs have been provided to the individual fields.
