Implement Small Scale Interventions to Improve Habitats
The aim of the project was to increase biodiversity using small scale interventions, such as restoring hedges and creating habitats for birds, invertebrates, mammals and reptiles. Volunteers helped to lay hedges and install 40 woodstone bat boxes, 43 bird nest boxes (for a variety of species), hedgehog and insect boxes.

Before Hedge-laying
After Hedge-laying
10 volunteers took paid to lay 40m of the hedge. The remaining 220m were laid by a contractor.
The laid hedges will provide a dense barrier, giving greater cover for small birds and insects. If they are not laid, hedges turn into lines of spindly trees which no longer offer dense cover for wildlife.

Reptile refuges (far left), insect boxes (left), and hedgehog boxes were installed by volunteers in eight protected green spaces around Histon & Impington.
