Community Bulb And Fruit Bush Planting In Urban Areas
The aims of the project were to increase biodiversity in the east end of Orchard Park and to provide education on the importance of biodiversity and its value in urban areas. Community bulb and fruit bush planting took place in Orchard Park by volunteers, and each session was followed by home-made soup and cakes made by volunteers within the cohousing community. This project aspired to attract people to the little-used green spaces and connect people at a local level to their immediate environment, to benefit nature, and to help build a greater sense of community.
6,185 bulbs and 20 fruit bushes were planted to increase biodiversity by creating species-rich floral and fruit-bearing areas. This will encourage pollinators and other invertebrates, which will in turn attract birds, mammals and reptiles.
22 volunteers helped to plant bulbs and fruit bushes during 34 planting sessions.
