Restoring the Coldham’s Brook, a chalk stream in the Abbey Ward
The Coldham’s Brook Improvements project focuses on the conservation and active restoration of one of Cambridge’s rare urban chalk streams, which are often described as England’s rainforests. Flowing from Cherry Hinton through the eastern suburbs, through Coldham’s and Stourbridge Commons to the River Cam, this fragile habitat has faced increasing pressures from silt accumulation, bank erosion, and pollution.
At the heart of the initiative is a strong commitment to community engagement and grassroots empowerment. Championed by Abbey People, the project bridges environmental conservation with community inclusion, specifically targeting engagement within the Abbey ward. Through hands-on volunteer workdays, citizen science initiatives, and collaborative co-design surveys, residents work side-by-side with environmental experts.
A vital part of this collaborative network is the partnership with a local “Friends” Group that has enlarged its remit to become “Friends of Cherry Hinton and Coldham’s Brook”. They act as eyes, ears and stewards of the whole length of the river system, from its source at Giant’s Grave, Cherry Hinton, to its confluence with the River Cam. Together, they monitor wildlife (such as water voles and kingfishers), organise regular clean-ups, and drive public awareness.
With support from Abbey People and the Open Space officers at Cambridge City Council, volunteers tackle practical restoration tasks: trimming and coppicing overhanging scrub to let light in, building woody debris deflectors to enhance water flow, and adding clean gravel to create oxygenated riffles for invertebrates and breeding fish. This bridges traditional environmental stewardship with community skill-sharing, ensuring local people actively protect and take pride in their shared blue-green spaces.
Coldham’s Brook also receives much-needed attention from the Greater Cambridge Chalk Stream Project (Cambridge City Council).
