A vibrant, biodiverse green corridor on Barnwell Road
The Barnwell Verge: Seeds of Hope project, led by the community charity Abbey People, transformed a neglected urban space in the Abbey Ward in Cambridge into a vibrant biodiverse green corridor. Sparked by the vision of a local young resident tired of seeing muddy, vehicle-damaged grass degrading public space and damaging tree roots, the initiative revitalised two key sites:
- Barnwell Road: A 250-metre linear green corridor along the main road next to Galfred Primary School, designed to mirror the nearby Coldham’s Brook. It features a “river” of woodland plants, wildflowers, spring bulbs, dead hedges, and log piles that safeguard existing trees from soil compaction while deterring illegal parking.
- Rayson Way Garden: A 500+ square metre community pocket garden providing a thriving, human- and pollinator-friendly oasis that encourages active travel and public connection with nature.
Guided by a professional landscape designer (Teasels Biodiverse Design) and a glass artist (Hurdy-Gurdy Glass), and co-created with local school children, residents, and volunteers, the project integrates stunning community-crafted stained-glass sculptures and bee posts in an a landscape abundant with flowers. It boosts local pollinators, improves urban drainage, and builds lasting intergenerational relationships.
