SUMMARY:Water Land & City: Toward a Sponge Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge is more than its historic centre: it sits at the edge of the Fens\, shaped by river valleys\, chalk streams\, and a long history of drainage and cultivation. This iterative exhibition explores our relationship with water and how we might move from controlling water to living with it. Drawing on the idea of ‘Sponge City’\, the exhibition brings together international examples and practices alongside local rain garden and climate resilient projects across Cambridge. \nWith today’s Cambridge facing a dual challenge of flooding and water scarcity\, this exhibition invites a reimagination of our relationship with water and the possibility of a more climate resilient\, sponge-like Cambridge. \nSupported by: Turenscape\, Water Sensitive Cambridge\, LDA design\, Teasels Design\, City of Cophenhagen (Københavns Kommune)\, SLA\, and Wysing Arts (Creative Youth Council). \nCurated by Zhuozhang Li (Cambridge Room Research & Community Design Research Lab) \nAssociated event: Drought & Flood: Gardening in a Changing Climate

SUMMARY:Deep Time Walk in Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:This 4.6-kilometre walk takes you on a journey through Earth’s deep history\, from around 4.6 billion years ago to the present day. \nAt a pace of 1 million years per metre\, we will stop off at key moments to discover the evolution of landscapes and life through stories\, conversation and reflection. \nRoute details: Starts at Parker’s Piece (Gonville Place entrance)\, through Coe Fen and other places\, and ends at the Anthropology museum (Pembroke Street)\, viewing familiar Cambridge through a ‘deep time’ lens (cosmological\, geological and evolutionary time scales). We will stop for a break and lunch at the halfway point. \nDuration: 4 hours | Distance: 4.6km | Accessibility: mostly paved and flat\, with some potentially muddy paths. \nPreparation: Please wear sturdy footwear and waterproofs if rainy\, bring a packed lunch and water. There will be an opportunity to purchase drinks/food at our lunch spot.

SUMMARY:Walking with Water in Common
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to notice a stream that is sometimes visible\, sometimes hidden\, yet shapes where and how we live? \nbook tickets: https://luma.com/78mjmtzz \nThis walking workshop invites you to get to know Hobson’s Brook from a new perspective\, both its visible presence and hidden absence in Cambridge. Together\, we will engage creatively with the river\, discover ways that water connects us\, and explore how we might care for water collectively. \nAlong the route we uncover and engage with historic and contemporary hydro-realities\, and investigate practical\, solution-oriented approaches to living with and as bodies of water. \nThinking with community-led design and research practices we ask: How can collective making on-the-move be a methodology for knowing\, caring\, relating and prefiguring worlds with/as more-than-human agencies and communities? \nWe start our walk at the north entrance of Nine Wells Woods—home to the chalk springs of both Hobson’s Brook and Vicar’s Brook—and end at the fountain in Market Square in Cambridge city centre. The walk will take approximately five hours including stops for discussions\, creative activities\, and lunch at Empty Common Community Garden (roughly halfway). \nThe workshop is co-led by Gustav Nielsen and Violeta Tsenova of the Community Design Research Lab (CDRL)\, and Clara Todd of Water Sensitive Cambridge (WSC)\, with support from the Centre for Research in the Arts\, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge.
