A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. DESCRIPTION:Discover your creative voice through this poetry writing masterclass\, inspired by Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College’s exhibition\, Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers. \nAimed at beginners\, this short\, fun introductory workshop led by tutor Yvonne Battle-Felton\, is ideal for those wanting to take their first step into poetry. With prompts provided\, you will be given guidance in crafting a poem inspired by the Spring Summer season and the natural world. Participants are invited back for our Library Late (Thursday 18 June) where you have the opportunity to read your poem in front of a live audience. \nWalking tour opportunity – To provide you with inspiration for your writing\, we have teamed up with Water Sensitive Cambridge to offer participants a FREE space on a Deep Time Walk. Explore the watery landscapes of Cambridge and 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history on a 4.6 kilometres (2.85 miles) walk. The walk will take place on Sunday 31 May from 11am-3pm with a break for lunch (bring your own\, or purchase at a cafe). We will ask you to confirm your place on the tour when you book. DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. Visitors are invited to sit\, pause\, perhaps read a poem\, while they contemplate these human-sized works which trace the presence and flow of water. \nLiving Water is hosted across two sites at Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College. \n\nMonday – Friday 9am to 6.30pm (last entry 6pm) \nSaturday 9am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) \nSunday closed\n\nEntry is FREE and OPEN TO ALL.
