SUMMARY:Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. Visitors are invited to sit\, pause\, perhaps read a poem\, while they contemplate these human-sized works which trace the presence and flow of water. \nLiving Water is hosted across two sites at Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College. \n\nMonday – Friday 9am to 6.30pm (last entry 6pm) \nSaturday 9am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) \nSunday closed\n\nEntry is FREE and OPEN TO ALL. DESCRIPTION:Using ropes and harnesses\, ascend into the canopy of one of Wimpole’s largest trees\, and enjoy an exhilarating adventure at new heights. \nDuring your climb\, you will learn how to safely reach the top of giant trees and take in the views of the parkland. You can hang out in the canopy or venture further out onto the branches if you’re feeling brave\, before returning safely to the ground. \nThis activity is suitable for ages 6 to 100\, and each session is run for up to 8 people\, creating a unique and intimate experience. We encourage the whole family to participate\, or feel free to watch and photograph that special moment of your child climbing high into the canopy of a tree for the first time. \nEach ticket admits one climber\, and for any climber under 18 years old admits one accompanying adult. No children may be left unsupervised during this session. \nBooking essential. \n£30 per person\, admission to the Estate is included for the ticket holder.

SUMMARY:Boat trips at Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Sit back\, relax and watch the world go by as you explore the beautiful fenland waterways on the Mayfly. The 50-minute trips run from mid-March to late October. \nOur open boat is powered by a quiet electric motor\, allowing you to enjoy the tranquility of the Fen. Our expert driver will be able to let you know about the wildlife on the day\, point out features of the Fen\, and answer questions about fenland waterways and drainage. \nBoat trips run most days throughout the summer\, usually departing at 11:00\, 12:30\, 14:15 and 15:45. Please contact us on 01353 720274 to check availability and to book. This iterative exhibition explores our relationship with water and how we might move from controlling water to living with it. SUMMARY:Water Land & City: Toward a Sponge Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge is more than its historic centre: it sits at the edge of the Fens\, shaped by river valleys\, chalk streams\, and a long history of drainage and cultivation. This iterative exhibition explores our relationship with water and how we might move from controlling water to living with it. SUMMARY:Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. Visitors are invited to sit\, pause\, perhaps read a poem\, while they contemplate these human-sized works which trace the presence and flow of water. \nLiving Water is hosted across two sites at Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College. \n\nMonday – Friday 9am to 6.30pm (last entry 6pm) \nSaturday 9am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) \nSunday closed\n\nEntry is FREE and OPEN TO ALL. DESCRIPTION:Using ropes and harnesses\, ascend into the canopy of one of Wimpole’s largest trees\, and enjoy an exhilarating adventure at new heights. \nDuring your climb\, you will learn how to safely reach the top of giant trees and take in the views of the parkland. You can hang out in the canopy or venture further out onto the branches if you’re feeling brave\, before returning safely to the ground. \nThis activity is suitable for ages 6 to 100\, and each session is run for up to 8 people\, creating a unique and intimate experience. We encourage the whole family to participate\, or feel free to watch and photograph that special moment of your child climbing high into the canopy of a tree for the first time. \nEach ticket admits one climber\, and for any climber under 18 years old admits one accompanying adult. DESCRIPTION:This 4.6-kilometre walk takes you on a journey through Earth’s deep history\, from around 4.6 billion years ago to the present day. \nAt a pace of 1 million years per metre\, we will stop off at key moments to discover the evolution of landscapes and life through stories\, conversation and reflection. \nRoute details: Starts at Parker’s Piece (Gonville Place entrance)\, through Coe Fen and other places\, and ends at the Anthropology museum (Pembroke Street)\, viewing familiar Cambridge through a ‘deep time’ lens (cosmological\, geological and evolutionary time scales). We will stop for a break and lunch at the halfway point. \nDuration: 4 hours | Distance: 4.6km | Accessibility: mostly paved and flat\, with some potentially muddy paths. \nPreparation: Please wear sturdy footwear and waterproofs if rainy\, bring a packed lunch and water. There will be an opportunity to purchase drinks/food at our lunch spot.

SUMMARY:The Kite Nature Project: Play with Ecosystem Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Across three connected sessions\, we’ll explore how ecosystems work\, and how we can apply ecosystem thinking to create change that sticks. \n\n\n\n\nOnce a heritage market garden that fed Cambridge\, the Kite Nature Project at Brandon Court is now being reimagined by residents and Together Culture as a shared permaculture space.\nAs the seasons change\, we’ll gather in the Kite Nature Project to learn from nature\, think in ecosystems\, and grow a deeper sense of nature-relatedness. And yes\, we’ll also get our hands in the dirt. \nAcross three connected sessions\, we’ll use the garden as both classroom and metaphor: exploring how ecosystems work\, how change really happens\, and what it means to cultivate capacity in ourselves\, our work\, and our communities. \nYou’ll: \n\nSpend time in the Kite Nature Project learning practical permaculture principles\nExplore social science frameworks that unlock new ways of seeing your life and work\nChoose something in society that is causing some tension – something you’re interested in changing. This could be in a team at work\, a community you belong to\, or wider society. You’ll work with this across all three sessions.\nConnect with others who care about nature\, systems\, and doing things differently\n\nEach session stands alone\, but they’re designed as a journey. Session 1 widens your lens\, Session 2 explores how change actually happens\, and Session 3 looks at how we cultivate long-term capacity to create societal change. \nIf you’re interested in developing your ecosystem thinking skills for making change at work or in wider society\, this series is for you. Book the full series for the biggest impact. \n\n\nMore information and book tickets \nSession 1: Widening Your Lens – Ecosystem Perspective\nIn this first session\, we’ll slow down\, step into the Kite Nature Project\, and practice seeing the world through an ecosystem lens. \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll start by exploring the permaculture zones in our nature project on Prospect Row. You’ll learn how permaculture designers think about space\, energy\, and relationships – and how that shapes where things are planted and how they’re cared for. \nIn social science \nWe’ll introduce Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model – a way of understanding how different “zones” of your life (you\, your family\, your work\, your community\, governance and culture) shape who you are and what you believe. You’ll map your own ecosystem so you can literally see the layers that influence you. \nIn your community \nYou’ll then choose something in society that is causing some tension – something you’re interested in changing. We’ll use Brofenbrenner’s model to develop an idea of where an opportunity for evolution might sit. \n  \nSession 2: Understanding Change – The Purpose of Tension in Ecosystems\nChange is rarely neat. Ecosystems – and humans – rely on tension\, uncertainty and difference to adapt and evolve. In Session 2\, we’ll explore how that plays out in nature and in our own ways of thinking about change. \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll spend time observing the blossoms. Blossoms are about possibility and transition – beautiful\, temporary\, a little uncertain. We’ll use them as a living prompt for noticing change\, tension\, and the “not yet”. \nIn social science \nDrawing on work from the Good Shift\, a systems thinking and change institute in Australia\, we’ll explore seven different “change worldviews”. It turns out we often assume we’re on the same page about change… when actually\, we’re thinking in totally different ways. How we think shapes what we notice\, what we believe is true\, and how we act. You’ll be invited to discover you own change worldview and notice how it shows up in your life\, work\, and relationships. \nIn your community \nWe’ll bring back the real life scenario you chose in Session 1 and look at it through different change worldviews. What happens if you approach it as something to fix? To nurture? To experiment with? To completely reimagine? \nYou’ll leave with a clearer sense of your own default worldview\, and new options for working with the societal point of tension you’re exploring across the series. \nThis session builds on Session 1\, but you’re welcome even if you missed it. If you can\, join all three for the biggest change impact. \n  \nSession 3: From Service to Cultivation – How Does an Ecosystem Evolve?\nIn our final session\, we’ll zoom out to ask: how do ecosystems – and communities – build capacity over time? What does it mean to move from “providing a service” to cultivating something more resilient and alive? \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll share the co-created “What does it mean to be a gardener?” insights from our Brandon Court community development work. Together we’ll explore how a gardener doesn’t just “do tasks”\, but builds capacity – slowly\, patiently – through skills\, deep trust\, experimentation\, and trying new (and sometimes bigger) things. \nIn social science \nWe’ll look at a simple model that contrasts “service delivery” with “capacity building”. For example\, libraries have often been framed as service places – but what would it look like if we saw them as capacity-building places\, where skills\, relationships and confidence grow? \nIn your community \nYou’ll reflect on the journey you’ve taken across the series with the real life scenario you wanted to change\, and how you might shift from “servicing” it (managing\, firefighting\, fixing) to cultivating it (building capacity in yourself\, others\, and your wider ecosystem). \nYou’ll leave with a practical sense of how to use ecosystem thinking for making change at work or in society\, and ideas for next steps in your own change journey. \nThis is the third step in a three-part journey\, and it will be richest if you’ve joined us for Sessions 1 and 2. DESCRIPTION:Explore the reserve on two wheels and enjoy an easy family ride to see the Konik ponies or discover the wildlife in the wider reserve. \nCycle hire is open Thursday to Sunday\, daily during school holidays\, and on Bank Holidays. Opens 10 am; last hire 2:30 pm\, return by 4:30 pm. \nWe have a range of bikes available for hire\, including ebikes\, trikes and children’s bikes. There’s no need to book for cycle hire unless you have specific requirements. Helmets are available\, although you should bring your own if you have one. SUMMARY:Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. Visitors are invited to sit\, pause\, perhaps read a poem\, while they contemplate these human-sized works which trace the presence and flow of water. \nLiving Water is hosted across two sites at Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College. \n\nMonday – Friday 9am to 6.30pm (last entry 6pm) \nSaturday 9am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) \nSunday closed\n\nEntry is FREE and OPEN TO ALL. SUMMARY:Big Tree Climbing Event
DESCRIPTION:Using ropes and harnesses\, ascend into the canopy of one of Wimpole’s largest trees\, and enjoy an exhilarating adventure at new heights. \nDuring your climb\, you will learn how to safely reach the top of giant trees and take in the views of the parkland. You can hang out in the canopy or venture further out onto the branches if you’re feeling brave\, before returning safely to the ground. \nThis activity is suitable for ages 6 to 100\, and each session is run for up to 8 people\, creating a unique and intimate experience. We encourage the whole family to participate\, or feel free to watch and photograph that special moment of your child climbing high into the canopy of a tree for the first time. \nEach ticket admits one climber\, and for any climber under 18 years old admits one accompanying adult. No children may be left unsupervised during this session. \nBooking essential. \n£30 per person\, admission to the Estate is included for the ticket holder.

SUMMARY:Flora and Fauna at the Old Rec\, Cottenham
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Old Rec’ is a meadow at the bottom of Broad Lane\, Cottenham\, just before the bridge over the Lode. It is so-called because it was created as the parish recreation ground in the 19th century during the Enclosures. In recent years the field has been actively managed to encourage biodiversity. \nTo discover more about the flora and fauna to be found at the Old Rec join volunteers from Sustainable Cottenham’s Nature Recovery Group on the morning of Saturday 30th May. There will be experts on hand to talk about the small mammals which live in the area as well as the moths that fly at night and to show you some of the plants and trees which can be found there. \nThe event will begin early – at 8am prompt – when we find out whether we have caught any small mammals*. They will be released by 10am to avoid putting them under stress. \nThere will be short talks and tours about the flora and fauna at 9am\, 10am and 11am. \n*If you want to see our volunteer setting the small mammal traps the evening before\, come to the Old Rec at 6pm on Friday 29th May. \nThis event is part of the Cambridge Nature Festival 2026\, 23rd May – 30 June\, a celebration of Nature on your doorstep. DESCRIPTION:Grab this chance to see our fantastic local bat population as they emerge from hibernation in May and follow their activities until their return to a snug hideout for winter.\nThe tours are led by knowledgeable Wildlife Trust Bat Experts and they’ll make sure you get the most from your experience. The tours are chauffeured and include the use of specialist electronic bat detectors which convert bats’ sonar signals into audible frequencies.\nYour guide will outline characteristics and habitats of bats likely to be encountered on your trip and teach you how to use the detectors. You’ll identify exactly which species of bat are flying close to your punt and find out about our amazing local species. \nThe new dates for 2026 will be from 15 May 2026 to 26 September 2026. From 15 May to 12 June\, the tours will run on Fridays only. Then\, from 13 June through to 26 September\, they will run on both Fridays and Saturdays. \nPrices vary based on the number of passengers. The current rate is £71 for two people in a row\, £83 for three\, and £41 for a single row. \nStart times vary per evening.
