SUMMARY:The Kite Nature Project: Play with Ecosystem Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Across three connected sessions\, we’ll explore how ecosystems work\, and how we can apply ecosystem thinking to create change that sticks. \n\n\n\n\nOnce a heritage market garden that fed Cambridge\, the Kite Nature Project at Brandon Court is now being reimagined by residents and Together Culture as a shared permaculture space.\nAs the seasons change\, we’ll gather in the Kite Nature Project to learn from nature\, think in ecosystems\, and grow a deeper sense of nature-relatedness. And yes\, we’ll also get our hands in the dirt. \nAcross three connected sessions\, we’ll use the garden as both classroom and metaphor: exploring how ecosystems work\, how change really happens\, and what it means to cultivate capacity in ourselves\, our work\, and our communities. \nYou’ll: \n\nSpend time in the Kite Nature Project learning practical permaculture principles\nExplore social science frameworks that unlock new ways of seeing your life and work\nChoose something in society that is causing some tension – something you’re interested in changing. This could be in a team at work\, a community you belong to\, or wider society. You’ll work with this across all three sessions.\nConnect with others who care about nature\, systems\, and doing things differently\n\nEach session stands alone\, but they’re designed as a journey. Session 1 widens your lens\, Session 2 explores how change actually happens\, and Session 3 looks at how we cultivate long-term capacity to create societal change. \nIf you’re interested in developing your ecosystem thinking skills for making change at work or in wider society\, this series is for you. Book the full series for the biggest impact. \n\n\nMore information and book tickets \nSession 1: Widening Your Lens – Ecosystem Perspective\nIn this first session\, we’ll slow down\, step into the Kite Nature Project\, and practice seeing the world through an ecosystem lens. \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll start by exploring the permaculture zones in our nature project on Prospect Row. You’ll learn how permaculture designers think about space\, energy\, and relationships – and how that shapes where things are planted and how they’re cared for. \nIn social science \nWe’ll introduce Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model – a way of understanding how different “zones” of your life (you\, your family\, your work\, your community\, governance and culture) shape who you are and what you believe. You’ll map your own ecosystem so you can literally see the layers that influence you. \nIn your community \nYou’ll then choose something in society that is causing some tension – something you’re interested in changing. We’ll use Brofenbrenner’s model to develop an idea of where an opportunity for evolution might sit. \n  \nSession 2: Understanding Change – The Purpose of Tension in Ecosystems\nChange is rarely neat. Ecosystems – and humans – rely on tension\, uncertainty and difference to adapt and evolve. In Session 2\, we’ll explore how that plays out in nature and in our own ways of thinking about change. \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll spend time observing the blossoms. Blossoms are about possibility and transition – beautiful\, temporary\, a little uncertain. We’ll use them as a living prompt for noticing change\, tension\, and the “not yet”. \nIn social science \nDrawing on work from the Good Shift\, a systems thinking and change institute in Australia\, we’ll explore seven different “change worldviews”. It turns out we often assume we’re on the same page about change… when actually\, we’re thinking in totally different ways. How we think shapes what we notice\, what we believe is true\, and how we act. You’ll be invited to discover you own change worldview and notice how it shows up in your life\, work\, and relationships. \nIn your community \nWe’ll bring back the real life scenario you chose in Session 1 and look at it through different change worldviews. What happens if you approach it as something to fix? To nurture? To experiment with? To completely reimagine? \nYou’ll leave with a clearer sense of your own default worldview\, and new options for working with the societal point of tension you’re exploring across the series. \nThis session builds on Session 1\, but you’re welcome even if you missed it. If you can\, join all three for the biggest change impact. \n  \nSession 3: From Service to Cultivation – How Does an Ecosystem Evolve?\nIn our final session\, we’ll zoom out to ask: how do ecosystems – and communities – build capacity over time? What does it mean to move from “providing a service” to cultivating something more resilient and alive? \nIn the Kite Nature Project \nWe’ll share the co-created “What does it mean to be a gardener?” insights from our Brandon Court community development work. Together we’ll explore how a gardener doesn’t just “do tasks”\, but builds capacity – slowly\, patiently – through skills\, deep trust\, experimentation\, and trying new (and sometimes bigger) things. \nIn social science \nWe’ll look at a simple model that contrasts “service delivery” with “capacity building”. For example\, libraries have often been framed as service places – but what would it look like if we saw them as capacity-building places\, where skills\, relationships and confidence grow? \nIn your community \nYou’ll reflect on the journey you’ve taken across the series with the real life scenario you wanted to change\, and how you might shift from “servicing” it (managing\, firefighting\, fixing) to cultivating it (building capacity in yourself\, others\, and your wider ecosystem). \nYou’ll leave with a practical sense of how to use ecosystem thinking for making change at work or in society\, and ideas for next steps in your own change journey. \nThis is the third step in a three-part journey\, and it will be richest if you’ve joined us for Sessions 1 and 2. If you’re able\, we warmly encourage you to book the full series and travel through the whole cycle of developing ecosystem thinking skills.

SUMMARY:Water Land & City: Toward a Sponge Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge is more than its historic centre: it sits at the edge of the Fens\, shaped by river valleys\, chalk streams\, and a long history of drainage and cultivation. This iterative exhibition explores our relationship with water and how we might move from controlling water to living with it. Drawing on the idea of ‘Sponge City’\, the exhibition brings together international examples and practices alongside local rain garden and climate resilient projects across Cambridge. \nWith today’s Cambridge facing a dual challenge of flooding and water scarcity\, this exhibition invites a reimagination of our relationship with water and the possibility of a more climate resilient\, sponge-like Cambridge. \nSupported by: Turenscape\, Water Sensitive Cambridge\, LDA design\, Teasels Design\, City of Cophenhagen (Københavns Kommune)\, SLA\, and Wysing Arts (Creative Youth Council). \nCurated by Zhuozhang Li (Cambridge Room Research & Community Design Research Lab) \nAssociated event: Drought & Flood: Gardening in a Changing Climate

SUMMARY:Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. SUMMARY:No Trees No Seas
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of No Trees No Seas\, a powerful new feature-length documentary exploring the hidden connection between our forests and oceans. \n  \nFor thousands of years\, the British Isles were home to vast forests that swept across the land\, right to the sea’s edge. Two separate worlds\, divided by the shoreline. \n  \nWhat we couldn’t see were the forests sending life to the sea\, and the sea giving life back to the forests. Not two separate worlds\, but a single living system – trees and seas connected in ways we’re only now beginning to understand. \n  \nWhen we cut down the forests\, we severed that connection. And our seas have been suffering ever since. \n  \nNo Trees No Seas is a Cornwall-born project and campaign spearheaded by Plant One\, with a bold mission: to restore both our forests and our seas.

SUMMARY:Calm Under the Canopy (Wandlebury)
DESCRIPTION:Every month on a Friday afternoon\, a friendly group gathers with our resident Green Coach\, David Lynch\, to slow down\, pause\, and immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of the woodlands of Wandlebury.  We wander gently into the denser vegetation\, tuning into birdsong\, shifting light in the canopy\, and the small\, joyful details that are so easily missed in daily life.  David offers simple practices that invite stillness\, presence\, and a deeper connection with the natural world and with our own experience\, supporting us to unwind and rediscover a sense of ease. \nWith this renewed clarity\, we return to the pop-up café to share stories\, exchange insights\, and form new friendships. If you’d like to manage stress more naturally\, live life with greater appreciation\, and become part of a warm\, nature-connected community at Wandlebury\, we’d love to welcome you. \nDavid is trained and experienced in guiding groups outdoors\, bringing together gentle nature-based practices\, ecotherapy principles\, and slow\, mindful movement.  Each gathering explores a fresh theme and builds on the shared wisdom of previous walks. \nThese events are suitable for complete beginners as well as those with previous experience. \nEach walk concludes at the pop-up café\, where we pause together\, reflect on the experience\, and continue building a sense of community. \n3 walks for £50 per person or 6 walks for £70 per person (concessions £40/£60). £25 (£20) per session.
A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. Visitors are invited to sit\, pause\, perhaps read a poem\, while they contemplate these human-sized works which trace the presence and flow of water. \nLiving Water is hosted across two sites at Cambridge University Library and Pembroke College. \n\nMonday – Friday 9am to 6.30pm (last entry 6pm) \nSaturday 9am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) \nSunday closed\n\nEntry is FREE and OPEN TO ALL. No booking required.  \nEvents in the Cambridge Nature Festival in partnership with the Living Water Exhibition\nEXHIBITION: Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers\nOngoing (University Library and Pembroke College) \nWORKSHOP: Poetry Writing Workshop with tutor Yvonne Battle-Felton\n6 June at 10 am (University Library)\n \nFILM: ‘Rivers of Film’ Shorts Part One\n28 May at 5:30 pm (University Library)\n \nFILM: ‘Rivers of Film’ Shorts Part Two\n25 June at 5:45 pm (Pembroke College) \n

SUMMARY:Sit and Read in Nature (Trumpington Meadows)
DESCRIPTION:This activity is part of a series of outdoor opportunities to enjoy nature on Cambourne Nature Reserve and Trumpington Meadows\, with a focus on sitting and having a quiet read together\, rather than walking. \nJoin Communities and Education Officer Rebecca Neal for a quiet reading session\, and a short walk on this beautiful and accessible nature reserve. \nWe’ll stroll a short distance on flat surfaced paths to find a nice spot in the orchard then set up picnic blankets or camping chairs. We’ll soak up the wildlife vibes\, perhaps identify some wildflowers\, or listen to bird song\, and enjoy reading our own books or magazines with a biscuit together. \nThese sessions are aimed at adults of all ages\, we’d love an inter-generational mix! Parents or carers with pre-walking babies are welcome. Paths are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. We are especially keen to offer places on these free activities to local people. \nBooking is essential to manage grouo size.
