SUMMARY:Science on Sundays - Broad ’n Mind: Broad beans for improved mental and planetary health
DESCRIPTION:Dr Nadia Mohd-Radzman\, Sainsbury Laboratory\nBroad beans or fava beans have unique properties that can tremendously benefit our mental health and promote sustainable agriculture. Beginning with a brief historical journey\, we will uncover how this ancient legume has nourished societies for centuries before exploring its renewed relevance today. We will then delve into the role of broad beans as a sustainable\, protein-rich crop and a promising functional food to improve our mental health. Finally\, the talk will highlight how plant biotechnology can unlock new possibilities for improving broad beans by enhancing their nutritional benefits while strengthening their environmental resilience in a changing climate. \nScience on Sundays is a programme of free\, informal\, monthly plant science talks taking place from March to August in the Botanic Garden. The series aims to bring the latest discoveries in plant science\, as well as research linked to the plant collection at the Garden\, to our visitors in a 30 minute nutshell.  \n\nFree with normal Garden admission.\nPlease check the website and social media for updates.\nSuitable for adults and children aged 12+. \nMore information \n\n

SUMMARY:Walking with Water in Common
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to notice a stream that is sometimes visible\, sometimes hidden\, yet shapes where and how we live? \nbook tickets: https://luma.com/78mjmtzz \nThis walking workshop invites you to get to know Hobson’s Brook from a new perspective\, both its visible presence and hidden absence in Cambridge. Together\, we will engage creatively with the river\, discover ways that water connects us\, and explore how we might care for water collectively. \nAlong the route we uncover and engage with historic and contemporary hydro-realities\, and investigate practical\, solution-oriented approaches to living with and as bodies of water. \nThinking with community-led design and research practices we ask: How can collective making on-the-move be a methodology for knowing\, caring\, relating and prefiguring worlds with/as more-than-human agencies and communities? \nWe start our walk at the north entrance of Nine Wells Woods—home to the chalk springs of both Hobson’s Brook and Vicar’s Brook—and end at the fountain in Market Square in Cambridge city centre. The walk will take approximately five hours including stops for discussions\, creative activities\, and lunch at Empty Common Community Garden (roughly halfway). \nThe workshop is co-led by Gustav Nielsen and Violeta Tsenova of the Community Design Research Lab (CDRL)\, and Clara Todd of Water Sensitive Cambridge (WSC)\, with support from the Centre for Research in the Arts\, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge.

SUMMARY:Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
DESCRIPTION:‘Without living water\, we die.’\n\nThese stark words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and loughs he loved. A leading expressionist painter\, Cooke drew constant inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets\, including Seamus Heaney\, Ted Hughes and John Montague. \nThis exhibition uncovers a significant archive of letters\, manuscripts and artworks that offers fresh insight into their creative dialogue across five decades. At its heart lies the shared landscape that sustained them\, rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline. \nLiving Water is a partnership with Pembroke College\, Cambridge and is curated by Dr Mark Wormald\, Fellow in English at Pembroke College and award-winning poet. \nSome of the artworks and manuscripts in the exhibition reference death\, nudity and the objectification of women. \nAlso on show are works by acclaimed artist Susan Derges\, inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon. DESCRIPTION:As part of the exhibition\, Living Water: Poetry\, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers\, we are screening 10 short films commissioned for the Rivers of Film festival in 2025 across two events. Half of the 10 films will be shown at Part One at Cambridge University Library (28 May) and the other half at Part Two at Pembroke College (25 June). A ticket for both events is required if you wish to enjoy all 10 films.  \nAt both screenings\, expect powerful films that present the birth of river goddesses\, a deep dive into personal relationships with river systems\, an exploration of healing grief with water\, and more. Recommended for all lovers of water\, rivers\, river beings\, and the health of the element that keeps this whole ecosystem healthy!  \nSome of the filmmakers will be in attendance to talk about their process and their responses to the brief\, with a Q&A and introduction facilitated by Rivers of Film curator James Murray-White. You are invited to arrive in advance of the screening to enjoy the University Library’s part of the Living Water exhibition.   \nTo see the entire programme\, you should book tickets for both events (both part one and part two).  \nPlease note that the capacity at the University Library screening is lower than the one at Pembroke College.
