SUMMARY:Science on Sundays - Broad ’n Mind: Broad beans for improved mental and planetary health
DESCRIPTION:Dr Nadia Mohd-Radzman\, Sainsbury Laboratory\nBroad beans or fava beans have unique properties that can tremendously benefit our mental health and promote sustainable agriculture. Beginning with a brief historical journey\, we will uncover how this ancient legume has nourished societies for centuries before exploring its renewed relevance today. We will then delve into the role of broad beans as a sustainable\, protein-rich crop and a promising functional food to improve our mental health. Finally\, the talk will highlight how plant biotechnology can unlock new possibilities for improving broad beans by enhancing their nutritional benefits while strengthening their environmental resilience in a changing climate. \nScience on Sundays is a programme of free\, informal\, monthly plant science talks taking place from March to August in the Botanic Garden. The series aims to bring the latest discoveries in plant science\, as well as research linked to the plant collection at the Garden\, to our visitors in a 30 minute nutshell.  \n\nFree with normal Garden admission.\nPlease check the website and social media for updates.\nSuitable for adults and children aged 12+. \nMore information \n\n

SUMMARY:Six Inches of Soil + Panel
DESCRIPTION:This showing of the inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, benefit our health and provide for local communities takes place at the Stapleford Village Weekend. The film will be followed by a short talk from a panel of experts\, including the film’s producer\, Claire Mackenzie. \nAbout the Film\n\nSix Inches of Soil tells the inspiring story of young English farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil and our health and provide for local communities. \nHalf the food we eat in the UK is produced by about 180\,000 farmers\, who manage 70 per cent of our land. Current “industrial” mainstream farming practices significantly contribute to soil degradation\, biodiversity loss and climate change. Regenerative farming practices within an agroecological system promote healthier soils\, provide healthier\, affordable food\, restore biodiversity and sequester carbon. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe film is a story of three new farmers in the first year of their regenerative journey to heal the soil and help transform the food system – Anna Jackson\, a Lincolnshire 11th-generation arable and sheep farmer; Adrienne Gordon\, a Cambridgeshire small-scale vegetable farmer; and Ben Thomas\, who rears pasture-fed beef cattle in Cornwall. \nAs the trio of young farmers strives to adopt regenerative practices and create viable businesses\, they meet seasoned mentors who help them on their journey. They are joined by other experts who provide wisdom and solutions from a growing movement of people dedicated to changing the trajectory of food\, farming\, and the planet. \n\nBook tickets
