18. Artscaping In Bramblefields

Inspiring People: Celebrating The Nature On Our Doorstep

As part of the Cambridge Nature Festival, the aim of this project was to engage with people living in deprived wards and under-represented groups, or people living in areas with the least access to nature in the city of Cambridge – and to inspire them to get more in touch with the nature on their doorstep.

The arts and wellbeing charity, Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination (CCI), introduced Shirley Community Primary School to the practice of artscaping, a unique and evidence-based approach to making art in nature that grows nature connectedness and helps children flourish.

Families and neighbours then met in the nearby local nature reserve, Bramblefields, for an afternoon of drop-in activities. Each visitor took home their own creative care pack of art material and a set of pocket adventure cards to inspire more nature engagement. In total 193 children under 11 and 31 adults took part.

Their creative work has been used to design and print 3 new magical hangings from CCI’s Fantastical Forestcollection, a stunning compilation of work created by communities across the county. It is exhibited each year as part of Tree Charter Day and local celebrations of nature and community.
